:: Oversized herati motif flanking a navy blue field wrapped by minor borders in repeating meandering flower motif. Unique geometric character to the main border which showcases splayed floral arrangements and similar herati style relief. The herati design has roots in Persian literature and folklore as a playful interpretation of two fish chasing each other around the world: more traditionally known as the “mahi-mahi” design. Therefore, in a continuous pursuit, either fish is opposed diagonal from the other at any given time. Pertaining to this rug, the weavers clearly make a considered effort to revive this folklore. Carpets dating back to the 18th century often will show the fish-like details of a herati/mahi-mahi design, although in the mid to late 19th century, in catering to foreign markets and exports, the design was often simplified, and omitted, the details and nuances which may otherwise clearly identify the fish-like characteristics. In most probability this evolution was an effort to cater more closely to design resonating more with international markets. Areas of localized distress and even wear across. Foundation showing close to the center of the carpet. Fully secured sides and ends. Recently professionally cleaned ready for in-home use! Many years of enjoyment to come with this distressed antique hand knotted Persian Malayer rug woven circa 1910’s. Exact size measures 4’1″ x 6’4″.
