Old Smiling Man with Pipe

:: Amazing detail in this authentic hand made original portrait of a wise happy old man with a frothy white beard and pipe! Exquisite shading and use of mixed medium. Great application and contrast of highlights for the furry brow and nose, and even absence of application for pipe smoke. A favorite! Appears to be a mix of paper, watercolor, India ink and correction wash atop of paper mounted on board. Beautiful artist signature in lower right corner on a slight angle which appears to read Ray Mandello 35, we presume this is circa 1935. Some illegible writing on the reverse side. Condition: Brown tinting of paper, a hard crease of paper in upper right corner – this appears to have happened when mounted on the board – does not appear to be from mishandling since it does not transfer to the other side. Full size measures 8″ x 8.75″ and cropped, the dimensions would be slightly smaller.
